About Tom Bergin

Tom BerginTom Bergin is a multi-award winning investigative reporter with the Reuters news agency and author of the critically acclaimed “Spills & Spin: The inside Story of BP”. His investigations have exposed corporate tax avoidance, product and worker safety failures and weaknesses in industry regulation. His work has won many awards including The George Orwell Prize for Journalism, Britain’s most prestigious prize for political reporting, and a Gerald Loeb Award, the United States’s most prestigious prize for business reporting.
Tom has been a journalist for 15 years, mostly with Reuters.  In 2001, he was one of the first journalists to warn about the dangers of the nascent credit derivatives market and through the early 2000s covered a raft of mega mergers and corporate collapses as Reuters Mergers and Acquisitions Correspondent. He subsequently led Reuters coverage of the UK economy before charting rocketing oil prices and the machinations behind them, in the latter half of the decade.
Tom reported on the oil major BP for many years, which led to a ring side seat on the company’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010. Tom subsequently wrote Spills & Spin: The Inside Story of BP”, which was named a Sunday Times’ Book of the Year for 2011.
Tom has reported from over twenty countries from East Russia to the United States and from the northern North Sea to South Africa.
Over the years has writen about everything from winemaking to international terrorism and his work has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and countless other newspapers and websites around the world.
Tom is a regular commentator on television and radio in Europe and the United States and appears every month on the BBC News channel’s nightly newspaper review.
Before becoming a journalist, Tom worked in fund management, as an oil broker and as a reasearcher for the Mexican government’s foreign trade bank, Bancomext.
Tom was brought up in Ireland. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College and studied economics and philosophy at University College Dublin and business at University College Galway.
